The Georgian period, named after the reigns of the four King Georges of England (1714-1830), is a dynamic and evolving era for jewelry design. Early Georgian jewelry often reflected the Baroque and Rococo styles, with elaborate designs and intricate details. As the period progressed, the influence of Neoclassicism became more pronounced, with motifs inspired by ancient Greece and Rome becoming popular.
Jewelry from this time was typically handcrafted, as mass production techniques had not yet been developed. This means that each piece from the Georgian era is unique, with variations that reflect the individual taste of the jeweler.
Georgian jewelers employed a variety of materials. Diamonds were often set in silver, as it was believed to enhance their sparkle, while colored gemstones were typically set in gold. The use of paste, a type of leaded glass, was also common for simulating the appearance of precious stones.
Designs were rich and varied, as cultural influences of the time came from symbolism and nature. For example, anchors representing hope or snakes symbolizing eternity. Cameos and intaglios, with carved gemstones or shells, were highly prized. Girandole earrings featuring a central element with three dangling components came from the Georgian era.
Jewelry in that time was often designed for specific occasions. For instance, mourning jewelry was crafted to commemorate loved ones, featuring somber designs and materials like jet or black enamel. Such gifts as sentimental jewelry, with lover's eye miniatures or lockets containing hair, were widely popular.
We love Georgian jewelry due to its rarity and the craftsmanship it represents. Its designs provide a glimpse into the fashion and culture of 18th and early 19th-century Europe.
Purchasing estate jewelry is an excellent way to buy high-quality pieces at a fair price. Those who appreciate classic or one-of-a-kind pieces prefer purchasing estate jewelry for a wide range of styles and historical influences.
Buying jewelry online can be challenging. The quality of the making has not gotten better over time while the design is getting more and more generic. Add ever rising prices and you could end up not finding anything suitable. To purchase a high-quality jewelry piece for an obtainable price consider buying estate items.
Estate pieces mostly belong to the era when jewels were handmade and not mass produced. There were simply less jewelry makers at that time and they cared about their reputation. Opposed to the current fast fashion approach, life pace was in general slower. That allowed makers to take more time to craft a truly quality piece.
Designer pieces, aka signed pieces can cost multiple times more than their unsigned equivalents. We pay not only for an item itself but also for the brand advertising campaigns and all the buzz the name creates. Prices for estate jewelry form differently and mostly depend on the cost paid by a seller. A pre-owned Bulgari ring and a brand-new Bulgari piece have a significant price difference. Ask your local jewelry store about the retail price of the desired piece and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Pre-owned jewelry retains its value as over time it gets unique and sought-after. Think about purchasing a new car that loses its value right after you leave your dealer versus buying a vintage vehicle.
At Nadine Krakov Collection we are in love with all the things beautiful. Each of our estate jewelry pieces is in excellent condition. We preserve the history and the greatest styles of the past so our clients can enjoy it to the fullest.
An antique Georgian parure set, made of gold and silver, featuring rose cut diamond.
This impressive Georgian set includes a necklace, a pair of earrings, and a brooch.
The antique necklace features a series of circular elements, each adorned with a rose cut diamond at its center. The diamonds are set in silver floral design and surrounded by glossy black enamel on yellow gold. Tiny yellow gold flowers punctuate the necklace between the circular diamond details, adding depth to the overall composition. The central diamond designed with “en tremblant” effect (a French term to describe elements that create movement).
The dangling earrings mirror the necklace’s design with its elegant, elongated drops featuring rose cut diamonds set in silver and framed by enamel and gold detailing.
The brooch is designed as a cluster of rose cut diamonds, arranged in a floral motif. The opulent flower is framed by a ribbon of black enamel and gold that repeats the design of the set. This antique diamond brooch also has a trembler--a spring that holds the piece together and causes the movement.
This remarkable set comes in an original fitted box that is 200-300 years old.
