This vintage Larter & Sons signet ring, dating to circa 1930s, is crafted in 14k yellow gold with a substantial traditional form and an applied heraldic coat of arms on the face. The crest features a detailed shield surmounted by a helmet, with additional decorative elements and a scroll beneath. The raised design creates dimension against the polished gold surface, while the broad shoulders taper gradually into the band.
Larter & Sons was an American jewelry manufacturer with roots dating to 1865, operating a factory in Newark, New Jersey with a presence on Maiden Lane in New York City. The firm became particularly known for men’s jewelry and originally specialized in rings before expanding its production to signet rings, cufflinks, shirt studs, waistcoat buttons and other gold and platinum accessories. The Larter & Sons name was adopted in 1905 when Frederick H. Larter acquired the remaining interests in the earlier firm and entered into partnership with his sons.
The interior of the ring bears the distinctive Larter & Sons maker’s mark along with personal engraving from a previous owner. Larter & Sons is documented as using both its name and a pictorial shirt stud maker’s mark, a reference to the spring back shirt stud associated with the company. The ring weighs 18.5 grams and is a size 7.25 with the ability to be resized. The face measures 3/4 inch by 5/8 inch. The gold shows surface wear and patina consistent with age and previous use, visible in the photos.
